The MEL ‘Springer-Palgrave Macmillan’ Prizes

for the Best PhD Theses in Maritime Economics & Logistics (2022-2025)

In pursuit of its commitment to promote quality research and strengthen research links, particularly among young researchers, MEL organizes its ninth Competition for the best PhD theses that have been successfully defended during the period 1^st  March 2022 to 28^th February, 2025. The event will take place in the context of the annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME).

Submissions will be peer-reviewed by members of MEL’s Editorial Board
(to be announced after the submissions deadline)

The “MEL Springer-Palgrave Macmillan” Prize for the best PhD thesis in the 2022-2025 triennium is accompanied by a monetary award of € 1,000. Second prize (€ 500) is offered by the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association and the third prize by Norway’s Research Hub. Both sponsors (2^nd and 3^rd prize) also provide partial support for the travel expenses of the three short-listed contenders (for more info on this you can contact Professor Haralambides).

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their thesis plus an approximately 6,000-word paper of publishable quality, encapsulating the essence of the thesis. Literature review should be limited to the absolute minimum, i.e., to works that bear directly upon the development of the thesis. MEL’s Instructions to Authors can be found on the journal’s website. The winning papers will be published in MEL. Thesis and paper can be emailed to Professor Haralambides (haralambides@ese.eur.nl)  no later than the 15^th of March, 2025. Submissions should be accompanied by a letter from the competent university authorities indicating the date the PhD thesis was defended (PhDs defended shortly before or after these cutoff dates could also be considered at the sole discretion of the jury. Such authors may contact professor Haralambides to motivate their specific circumstances).
